Presently, over one billion people around the globe live in slums, mainly in developing countries, and this number is expected to double by 2030. More than 90 percent of global population growth over the next two decades will be in the poorest environmentally fragile cities of the Global South, the "developing world".

Population growth, however, will be almost nil in the Global North, the developed industrial countries.
